New census data has revealed that Idaho leads all other U.S. states in a key income metric.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019-23 American Community Survey (ACS) release shows Idaho leads the nation in median household income growth rate at 15.5%, compared with the previous survey for 2014-18, according to a news release.

In addition, Idaho’s median household income increased by $10,011 from the previous five-year survey, doubling the nation’s uptick of $5,144 and higher than the other 49 states and District of Columbia, according to the release.

Arizona ranked second for its growth rate at 12.3% and California ranked second for median household income dollar change which increased by $9,630. The nation’s income growth rate was 7.

Idaho’s median household income was 95% of the nation’s median household income of $78,538. Idaho’s level of income moved up in ranking compared with the previous survey from 39th to 30th nationally, yet its level was lower than all neighboring states except Montana.

Most of Idaho’s counties, both rural and urban, experienced gains with the highest growth rate in Blaine County at 33.5%, an increase of $21,210. Only three counties lost growth between the five-year periods: Benewah (-.1%), Power (-1.8%) and Franklin (-4.2%). There were 14 Idaho counties that grew faster than Idaho’s growth rate of 15.5%.

“The news that Idaho families’ earning growth is outpacing every other state is welcome news and not altogether surprising because Idaho is experiencing unprecedented economic prosperity,” Gov. Brad Little said in a statement. “Our success comes from the ingenuity of our businesses, our strong families, good government, and an unrelenting focus on keeping taxes low and supporting businesses. The rest of America wants what Idaho has. What Idaho is doing is working.”
