The nation enjoyed nearly 11 years of an economic expansion before the coronavirus brought that to a halt. Unemployment fell to a record 3.5% in the month prior to the onset of the pandemic and hit a peak of 14.7% before receding to single-digit levels. The economy is recovering in 2021 in terms of its gross domestic product, but it may be a few years before the labor market recovers fully, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed deep fissures in the country's economic equality.
Utah is the top state for economy. It’s followed by Colorado, Idaho, Washington and Massachusetts to round out the top five. Five of the 10 states with the strongest economies also rank among the top 10 Best States overall.
